Tadao Ando's Water Church

The Water Church done by Tadao Ando is one of the representing works of modern churches. Comparing to the old churches, The Water Church is more simplistic, yet not losing its divine feeling that a church should have. Although modern churches do not have some of the properties that old churches had (big pillars, extravagance and flourish decorative, sculptures that represents the power of god) but still The Water Church managed to present as a "church" image.
Before having the entire image of the church, ones need to follow a small path that leads to the church, which there's a long, L-shaped wall runs alongside the south and east of the buildings that line the edge of the pond, cover most part of the church, only showing the glass box above the building with cement-made cross, metaphoring the functionality of the building work as a church.
While walking to the end corner of the wall, you will see the cross standing on a flat water pond and a building consist of two box made from concrete and glass. Before entering the main chapel, ones need to pass through the metal framed glass box which there's four concrete cross monuments aligned as "口" arrangement. While passing through the huge cross monuments, it gave the visitor a feeling that the church is peace and powerful(similar to the effects brought by the huge pilars in old church) but yet humble(no extra decoration).
Entering the chapel, you will see the seats which face a big cross that sits in the middle of the pond in front. The panoramic view of the pond, the water, the sky, the cross and the forest as the back drop of the whole brings an inpact to the visitors within the church. One immediately experiences the beauty of mother nature and feels how tiny a human is.
Once the glass sliding door between the chapel and the pond is slided open, there will be complete interaction and connection with nature ( the breeze, the water, the sky, the sound, the forest). It shows how Tadao Ando expresses his understanding of the importance of connecting human with nature through architecture and how one should place a building in mother nature without destroying it. He sucessfully combines Japanese's conviction that simplicity is everything, and that beauty lies in simplicity in expression.
It can be said that Tadao Ando's Water Church is the most successful modern church that expresses the power of god without using gargantuan structure, symbolic objects, lavish decoration and sculptures yet can convey the same meaning. The user experiences within the church space the touch of the breeze, the rustling sound of the trees in the wind and the chirp of birds, the scent of the forest and chill of snows, the light between the clouds....that the user can be tremendously overwhelmed by the power of nature and how close that gods is with them.
