PROJECT 1B: THE JOURNEY OF 5 SENSES
In the group of 5, we are required to propose 2 schemes for a Walkway Space themed ‘journey for the 5 senses’ and design the space in the form of semi-open architecture by using two contrasting spatial types of your choice which is linear & concentric.
Throughout this project, we are able to:
1. Identify & explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use & experience
2. Identify & analyze case studies to inform the design project
3. Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space
4. Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures
5. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling & verbal presentation to communicate & visualize architectural design and ideas.
This is one of the walkway identify as a linear scheme, we name it:
"where the wild things are"
Project 1b can be said as the succession of Project 1a, to apply all the understanding in the design. For my group, we chose the song "Mad World" for Concentric Space and the short story "Where the wild things are" for Linear Walkway. A specific is chosen as well, Concentric space located at Portland, Linear Walkway located at the Great Lawn, Central Park of NYC.
" where the wild things are."
The concept is derived from the short story given by our tutor "Where the Wild Things Are", a boy who have a wild imagination arround in his room, a story about love, kinship and forgiveness.
From the story that the concept we derived is:
'CARTHASIS'
ca·thar·sis
kəˈTHärsəs/
noun
noun: catharsis; plural noun: catharses
The linear walkway is a journey where catharsis, the process of relieving emotional tensions can be achieved. The walkway itself is characteriesd by two segments:
Stress built up zone & stress relieved zone; different point of view between adult & children engenders different spatial and emotional experiences as they traverse through the spaces.
PRESENTATION BOARD
" mad world. "
everyone is drunk whereas i am sober.
Mad World originally is a song sang by two different covers. One by Gary Jules which sounds more despair while the earlier version by Tear for Fear which sounds more about anger rather than despair. The version of song we chose is by Gary Jules, also the song is the main theme for the movie "Donnie Darko", a dark, humuor and science fiction movie.
From the song that the concept we derived is:
'ADRIFT'
a·drift
əˈdrift/
adjective & adverb
-
(of a boat or its passengers) floating without being either moored or steered.
"a cargo ship went adrift"
synonyms:drifting, unmoored, unanchored More
-
(of a person) without purpose or guidance; lost and confused.
-
The concentric walkway is an urban fabrication which reflects the hetic & mundane pace of people's working life, the adrift feeling would be exaggerated and culminated with every constant step while getting closer to the main core. The main core is a communicatin platform which invites the visitors to
connect emotionally.

PROJECT 1A: THE JOURNEY OF 5 SENSES
Project 1A is focused on the analysis of precedent studies, we are required to choose a linear and concentric building, which we are able to understand and study the poetic qualities, the spatial organization, the form, the circulation which we will need to apply our understanding to Project 1b, and designing a Linear walkway and concentric space based on few songs, poems given by tutor.
So, the building we chose to study are Hall Of Prayer For Good Harvests for Concentric and Chichu Art Museum by Tadao Ando for Linear.
