"Give a man a mask & he will show you his true face."
in the realm of the digital, where the social, cultural & legal barriers do not hold significant sway, you are not the same. with the mask of anonymity, & free from meaningful repercussions, your primal self-takes hold, vulgar and raw.
It is also your most true self.
You know, as you read this, that you are currently nothing more than a facade. You behave as society & cultures expect you to, and actively suppress your true self. For fear of rejection, shame and danger, the only bastion of true expression lie in the digital world.
However, that may no longer be the case.
With the current merging of what was previously two distinct and disparate worlds, the demarcation between the physical and the digital has become blurred. No longer can we declare ourselves an entity living independently of one another.
With this phenomenon come challenges; the breaking down of this barrier allows us, sometimes, willingly or unwillingly, expose our true selves. For many, this is the first time they have exposed their primal, true selves to the public, and it is now up to us to react. Often, it is with surprise and anger. Some of us even recoil in disgust.
regardless, this is the new reality of the world, and is even perhaps, the dawn of a new revolution in human expression.
CONCEPT
Viewed from the fronts, the installation resembles a solid cloud, clearly demarking the interior and exterior. The cloud is white and clean, with professional looking work interspersed within its spaces.
This reflects the typical perception of the nature of the physical and the digital; two distinct, and different worlds that only occasionally intersect with each other.
However, as the user walks around it, the apparent solidness of the cloud vanishes, revealing it to be permeable and transparent. This demonstrates the phenomenon mentioned above; the merging of the physical and the digital. The user also sees that what was the clean, professional facade has been hiding these abstract pieces of self-expression.
