BUILDING
MATERIALS
[ARC 1513] / [BLD60103]
This module intends to inform the student of the relevant visual and physical properties of a wide range of building materials. It also encompass the broad environmental debate by including energy saving and recycled materials. For each material the module describes the manufacturing process, salient properties and typical uses of these materials, with the aim of ensuring their appropriate application within the awareness of the suitability of the physical and chemical properties as well as its ecological impact. Students will undergo a series of continuous assessments such as project and tests to ascertain the objective and outcome of the module is achieved.
MODULE OUTLINE
PROJECT1
[SOLID VS
VOID-
"SHAPPING
LIGHT
&
SPACE"]
In this project, I was asked to create an object within a 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 foot volume by using 3 different types of material chosen from a list given. I have to show my understanding of each of them materiallily and constructionally. I have chosen balsa wood, plastic sheet and paper cardboard and come up with a design concept, a"Black Hole".
I had placed strong emphasis on the exploration of the timber joinery methods as a start as it formed the backbone of my creation. I further studied how to join all these three different materials together in a craftman way without resorting too much to glue. In order to do so, I have to understand the properties of each of the materials. The final outcome of my exploration is a model composed of these materials and an A2 presentation board.
Below are the images of my model and the presentation board.
PROJECT BRIEF
REFLECTION
I was quite satisfied and happy with my work, and enjoyed the process of learning and research on aunthentic timber joineries (without using glues), and the discovery of how I could put three different kind of unrelated materials into something meaningful with a strong concept.
PROJECT2
["MATERIALLITY
OF SPACE :
AN
EXPERIMENTAL EXPLORATION"]
The second and final project of the Building Materials I module was initially a group work. It was later separated as individual project with each member taking a particular subject to further explore in depth.
We were required to work within a group and choose a building in Malaysia to study & analyse the spatial organisation, ergonomics, materials used and construction method applied.
The building we have chosen is a private bungalow in SS15. Its known as Wooi Residence, design by the owner Ar. Wooi himself, and through his allowance, we gained access to study the building along with him on the designs and concepts.
Below are the group and my individual presentation boards.
PROJECT BRIEF
REFLECTION
I was quite satisfied and happy working with my group mates, and enjoyed the process of learning and research on different materials' personalities, nature and properties and also Ar. Wooi's design approaches. Ar. Wooi also shares a lot of his personal careers development, views, and knowlegde about philosophy and building materials with us and I have more understanding what called "green building" by considering the energy consumption of making a builidng material(eg. making of bricks, steel), the process of building, transportation and etc.
p.s: And also a big thanks to Ar. Wooi for treating us ice-cream on such a hot day.
